MECC
Cell Improvement at Berg!

We have manufactured MECC's for many years. The covers
are heavy and sometimes difficult to maneuver while sewing. We recently looked
at adding an air assist system to help "float" the covers while sewing. The
table was modified using shop vacuums and polyethylene tubing. Right sized holes
were drilled in the table surface and attached to the blower side of the shop
vacuums using the poly tubing. When the vacuums are turned on, air is introduced
between the table surface and the fabric.

Dear LMC members and supporters,
As we continue as a business community to work through the current economic
downturn, the LMC Board believes that a further commitment to support one
another is of great importance. Therefore, the LMC will be providing a regular
newsletter to help facilitate this objective. The LMC network provides access to
a host of companies and organizations that can offer support in the following
ways.
First, for almost every one of us involved, there is a member that
can be either a supplier or customer to our respective businesses. These
opportunities for 'buy/sell' provide a chance to keep dollars working
regionally, and can help reduce lead times, inventory levels, and shipping
costs. read

Employee Led
Innovation Center Brings City Immediate
Results
Spokane has saved approximately $550,000 using
lean six sigma techniques. These results came within three months after the City
of Spokane's first wave of green belts and black belts completed training. It is
a 5:1 ROI since Mayor Verner initiated the process improvement endeavor in March
2008.
Three trained black belts bring the techniques to dedicated department
meetings. Typically, each 1 to 3 hour session results in 10 to 20 "ground level"
project ideas. Their black belt then helps the department further define the
ideas, predict their impact, and sort them for implementation.

Spokane's Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Chapter 248
Working With Greater Spokane Incorporated
(GSI)
This year, Spokane's SME Chapter 248 has been working with the GSI's
Manufacturing Roundtable, Spokane Public Schools, Spokane Community College and
local businesses to determine ways to enhance regional efforts promoting science
and technology in our region's K-12 schools. Chapter 248 has over 100 members
with engineering and manufacturing backgrounds and is linked to many programs
offered nationally by SME (including the Lean Bronze, Silver and Gold
Certification programs).
One such program offered by SME is called the
Gateway Academy, a day camp summertime experience for students having completed
6th - 8th grades and designed to inspire campers to learn more about science,
technology, engineering and math. Working with GSI and the West Valley School
District, the team's goal is to offer a Gateway Academy in the Spokane region
next summer (2010).

Book
Review
Today and
Tomorrow
Henry Ford in collaboration with Samuel
Crowther
Productivity Press, Cambridge, MA
ISBN: 0-915299-36-4
Why read
a book first published in 1926? What could anyone from 80+ years ago have to
say to a modern practitioner of Lean today? In the early 1980's, Norman Bodek
met Taiichi Ohno, the creator of Toyota's production system, and heard him state
that "he learned it all from Henry Ford's book." Today and Tomorrow is Henry
Ford's book. In Today and Tomorrow, Henry Ford speaks of how he grew a company
that achieved the unthinkable - cutting the price of a car in half, doubling
wages and producing a car from ore to finished product in 81 hours. For Lean
practitioners it's all in this book: Insistence that work environments be
spotlessly clean; businesses must think of serving their communities and society
at large; production techniques can't be taken for granted but must be
continuously changed for improvement; read
