At
West Coast Paper Company we are committed to customer service. This is
not an easy feat in a very competitive market place with price
pressures everywhere. How
do you set your company apart from the rest and still be competitive. The answer is developing a
company environment that is not afraid of change.
But change for the sake of
change does not lead to success. The
answer is developing a process and a culture that yields positive
change. The lean
process is a tool that when used correctly facilitates positive change.

out to other communities, communicate with our membership, and discover
all the possibilities of connecting with others. We encourage you to
become a member of our group on both!
You can leave comments,

Dear LMC members and supporters,
Recently
we were privileged to bring another prominent guest speaker to Spokane,
Dr. Durward Sobek, who led evening and half-day seminars on best
practices in executive leadership, operational management and new
product development. Thirty-five
LMC members took advantage of this opportunity, attending one or more
of the three workshops held October 28th and 29th,
2009 at the Spokane Club downtown and CenterPlace Regional Event Center
in the Valley. Topics
included the latest ideas and strategies for leading the lean
enterprise, using the A3 tool to improve communication and develop
robust, collaborative problem-solving processes throughout the
organization, and foundational principles for transforming product
development groups into much more productive organizations. Our thanks to all those
individuals and organizations who participated and helped make this
another successful event! ...read

LeaderSHIP in
Safety Project

Through
the LeaderSHIP in Safety Project,
a Safety & Health Investment Project grant funded by the
Washington State Department of Labor & Industries; 24 schools
representing 10 different school districts have set out to develop a
"culture of safety" among the secondary students being prepared to
enter the skilled trades workforce. The hope is that safety and
efficiency becomes automatic, second nature, and part of a young
workers work style. Providing safety education to both young workers
and worksite supervisors will ensure a higher degree of safety on the
worksite.
The
LeaderSHIP in Safety Project provides safety certification and
appropriate risk identification for instructors, students and worksite
supervisors. The project provides professional development to improve
instructor demonstration and implementation of shop safety and revised
curriculum materials to include the Principles of Lean Thinking, which
includes work flow inside the shop area, visual controls of tools and
equipment, and 5S implementations to maintain clean, efficient, safe
shop environments....read

Book Review
The Tipping
Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big
Difference
By
Malcom Gladwell
In all honesty, the Tipping Point
is not a Lean book. It
has, however, radically changed my thinking about how to improve the
chances of being successful with Lean.
Confused?? Please read on and let me
explain.
Many
companies have mastered the Lean tools, but have failed to make Lean a
driving force throughout their organization.
This book has profound
insights to help understand the spread of ideas, products, initiatives,
epidemics, etc. In
other words, it is a study in how "things", whatever they may be, reach
a Tipping Point that they catch on and spread like wildfire. I think we can all agree
that we would like Lean to catch fire and spread throughout our
organization.
I
will discuss applications to Lean at the end of the article, but you
must first understand the ideas presented in the book.
For that purpose, I've
included a summary of the book from wikisummaries.

25 LMC Meeting
Training
Within Industry (TWI) and Structured ON-the-Job
Training (S-OJT):
Effective Training for a Lean
Management System
The
Training Within Industry (TWI) program was
successfully developed and utilized in the United States during WWII in
response to an urgent need to increase production to unprecedented
levels. Millions of
civilians needed to be quickly and effectively trained to do production
jobs as soldiers went off to war.
After the war, this on-the-job training (OJT) program was
exported to Japan to where it played a vital role helping to quickly
rebuild their industrial base as a deterrent to social unrest. The TWI program became and
continues to be, an integral part of the Toyota Production System...read entire article...

March Networking Event
Inland Northwest Leadership
Council
Networking Event
Many
professional societies across the Spokane region, including the Inland
Northwest Lean Management Consortium (LMC), have recently begun working
more closely together for the betterment of their societies and the
region. A Board of
Directors was formed last November composed of regional Chairs from
each society and the Board agreed on a name for this group - the Inland
Northwest Leadership Council (INLC).
The Board met
again in January and developed a 2010 Mission Statement: "The
INLC is an association of Inland Northwest professional, business and
student organizations working together to strengthen our membership and
community." ...read
